Why Florence for a Weekend Base
Most people drive straight to Canon City or the Royal Gorge Bridge without realizing that Florence — just 15 minutes east — has its own compelling identity. As the Antique Capital of Colorado, Florence draws serious collectors and curious browsers from across the state. Its historic Main Street, lined with Victorian-era storefronts, contains over 100 antique dealers within easy walking distance.
Combine that with proximity to Class III–V whitewater on the Arkansas River, zipline tours above the Royal Gorge, craft beer at Florence Brewing Company, and dinner options in Canon City, and you have a weekend that covers serious ground without ever feeling rushed. Florence is your base camp.
Day 1 — Florence: Antiques, History & Craft Beer
Morning — Check In & Get Oriented
Arrive Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. Florence is small — the downtown is a few blocks and walkable from most lodging options. Grab coffee on Main Street and get your bearings. Most antique shops open at 10 AM, so a relaxed morning breakfast is a natural opener.
10:00 AM — Main Street Antique Shops
The antique district runs roughly from 1st to 6th Street on Main Street. Start at the north end and work south — most shops are within a three-block walk of each other. Colorado Central Antiques at 200 W Main is one of the largest, with over 10,000 square feet of space. Reflections Antique Mall and Old Territorial Antiques are both worth browsing. Plan at least 2–3 hours if you're serious. Budget $20–$60 for small finds; furniture pieces and jewelry can go much higher.
Tip: Cash gets you discounts at most dealers. Many booths have buy-3-get-1 type offers not posted anywhere — just ask.
12:30 PM — Lunch in Downtown Florence
Several lunch options are within easy reach of the antique district. Eat on Main Street and you can drop your finds back at the car before the afternoon stretch.
2:00 PM — Continue Shopping or Explore Side Streets
The afternoon is a good time for smaller specialty shops and galleries that open later. Florence also has art studios, vintage clothing, and curiosity shops tucked into the side streets. The downtown has a lived-in, unhurried quality — this is not a tourist theme park, it's a real town. Walk it slowly.
4:30 PM — Florence History & Architecture Walk
Florence is Colorado's first oil boomtown — oil was struck here in 1862, one year after Colorado Territory was created. The wealth from that early boom built the Victorian commercial architecture that now houses the antique district. A slow walk through downtown with that context in mind changes how you see it. The Carnegie Library building and several original 19th-century storefronts are worth pausing at.
6:00 PM — Florence Brewing Company
End Day 1 at Florence Brewing Company on Main Street. Small-batch craft ales, a dog-friendly patio, and the kind of local atmosphere you only find in a real Colorado small town. It's the right way to wrap up a day of browsing. The crowd skews locals mixed with weekend visitors — a good place to ask for recommendations.
Hours vary seasonally. Check ahead for current closing time on weekends.
Day 2 — Royal Gorge: Rafting, Ziplines & Canyon Dining
8:30 AM — Drive to Canon City (15 min)
Head west on US-50 from Florence. The 15-minute drive is straightforward with no turns — open rangeland gives way to canyon country as you get closer. Check in at your rafting or zipline outfitter by 9 AM for morning briefings. Book in advance on summer weekends — both outfitters fill up.
9:00 AM — Royal Gorge Rafting (Half-Day)
A half-day morning trip down the Royal Gorge section of the Arkansas River is the signature adventure in this area. The Royal Gorge run is Class III–V whitewater — experienced guides take you through named rapids with sheer granite walls rising over 1,000 feet above you on both sides. No experience required. All gear provided. Most morning trips run 3 to 4 hours, putting you back by early afternoon.
1:00 PM — Lunch at WhiteWater Bar & Grill
After the river, head straight to WhiteWater Bar & Grill on Highway 50 West in Canon City. Seasonal menu, craft cocktails, and a lively outdoor atmosphere — this is the natural post-raft lunch spot. It's the kind of place where you show up still damp from the river and fit in perfectly.
3:00 PM — Royal Gorge Zipline Tours
The afternoon is perfect for Royal Gorge Zipline Tours — a multi-line course with dramatic views across the canyon from above. If you did rafting in the morning, this gives you both perspectives on the gorge: from the river floor looking up, and from the canyon rim looking down. The contrast is striking. Courses run 2–3 hours.
6:00 PM — Royal Gorge Bridge & Park (Optional)
If your zipline tour puts you out early, the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is nearby and worth a stop. The suspension bridge is one of the highest in the United States. Late afternoon light in the canyon is exceptional. Check park hours ahead — they vary by season.
7:30 PM — Rooftop Social, Canon City
Finish the weekend at Rooftop Social in downtown Canon City — a rooftop bar at 302 Royal Gorge Blvd with live music, craft cocktails, and panoramic mountain views. It's the right send-off for two days in the gorge region.
Getting Here
Florence is on US-50 in Fremont County. Free parking on Main Street, usually easy on weekend mornings.
Where to Stay
Florence has limited lodging but makes an ideal base for the weekend — you're 15 minutes from everything and not paying Canon City resort prices. Check local vacation rentals and the handful of B&Bs in the historic district. Alternatively, base in Canon City and drive to Florence for Day 1.
If you want a truly unique experience, Royal Gorge Vacation Rentals offers glamping accommodations — yurts, Airstreams, and cabins — in the canyon area, just a short drive from both Florence and the gorge itself.
