Florence, Colorado — A Brief History

Florence holds the distinction of being Colorado's first oil boomtown. In 1862 — just one year after Colorado Territory was created — pioneers struck oil in the Canon City oil field, making it one of the first commercial oil fields in the American West, predating the famous Pennsylvania oil rush by only a few years.

That early economic energy shaped Florence into a prosperous trading and manufacturing center. The town's beautiful Victorian and commercial architecture along Main Street reflects that original prosperity — and today, those same historic storefronts house over 100 antique dealers, making Florence the Antique Capital of Colorado.

Situated along the Gold Belt Tour Scenic Byway and just 15 minutes from the Royal Gorge, Florence offers visitors a rare combination: genuine small-town Colorado character, world-class antiquing, and easy access to some of the state's most dramatic landscapes.
